REVIEW : MULA
Mula is an amazing musical trio from the Dominican Republic consisting of twins Anabel Acevedo and Cristabel Acevedo and Rachel Rojas. The group produces Spanish electronic music. Their style has been described as dark dembow, yet their brand of alternative electronic Latin dance music is smoother, less harsh, and cleaner than traditional dembow. It’s definitely more digestible to a more diverse audience. The musical compositions are complex, with changing drum rhythms from each movement in a single song. The group competently blends merengue beats with post punk and new wave. Elements from vaporwave, shoegazing, dubstep, trip hop are common over the tropical beats.
They’re newest album has found a large online audience, and the group has participated in major festivals in New York, Brazil, Mexico City and the DR. ‘Diamantes’ is catchy, it has all the quirkiness of a Bjork song without any of the annoyance. The song sticks in your head. ‘Nunca Paran’ shows the group’s skills. It encompasses much of what the band is about from dreamy, soft echoey harmonies to upbeat thumping dance. ‘No hay manera’ haunting driving merengue, drops into a Gameboy-esque chip tune. The voices have a dreamy Franz Gall, Bridgette Bardot, or Charlotte Gainsbourg quality. All female DR groups have progressed a long way since Las Chicas de Can.

Review : Hecho en Brooklyn
Review : HECHO EN BROOKLYN
After listening to Hecho en Brooklyn, you may feel that all other music is missing guiro. Speedy Latin drums seem to be a perfect match for hardcore punk licks. The infectious scratch now seems absent from classic songs by Motorhead or the Clash.
The group appeals to a variety of audiences as they blend heavy metal, Latin dance, and independent genres. Their work stands on the shoulders of genres from the past without belonging to any. The band makes international music from an older generation accessible and more palatable to another, while creating something entirely new. Each member brings a unique voice to the group creating an unparalleled line up.
Leopoldo de la Cruz glues disparate ideas together with his solid and foundational bass lines. The agile bass in merengue goes well with the aggressive tempo of punk and metal. Oscar Chulex provides a contemporary voice for the band. Chulex succeeds in taking on the challenge of blending eclectic styles while singing in bi-lingual tunes in an experimental genre.
Their tracks are filled with classic Carlos Santana style guitar progressions that are complex and tell a story. Hecho’s song La Tuerca is great to see live and their recording is clean while capturing the energy of their performances. A catchy, airy lead guitar builds over the gritty harmony. El Can, boasts a progressive, echoey synth that hovers over the upstroke guitar rhythm. This element clarifies the competing styles and gives the track a lot of depth.

REVIEW: Lael Llaverias
Singer, songwriter, producer, promoter, actor, festival organizer: Boom Box Repair Kit frontman Lael Llaverias has been busy, and you need to know what he’s been working on. As a music producer he has his hands in important projects all over New York and the Caribbean.
His record label, Bodega Island produces around 10 bands. But also collaborates with 100’s of other artists, books and organizes shows and promotes groups that aren’t fully produced by the label. Standout artists Mula, Maluca, Gallo Lester, Los Coulters, Hecho en Brooklyn, Happy Colors, Dinais, JOBO, and more have all contributed to the label’s success.
Lael also coordinates the biggest alternative Dominican music festival on Earth: Bodega Island Fest. In addition to annual Bodega Island Festivals, Lael has been putting together an onslaught of shows from groups on the label. Regular performances featuring open jam sessions are ongoing at Trans-Pecos in Brooklyn.
In late 2017 Lael’s own band Boom Box Repair Kit released a 5 track EP of epic Dominican rock titled Every Single One Of Us. The EP explores psychological themes while providing heavy punk guitar and lots of guira.
Lael’s wife Karina beautifully handles design and marketing for the label, keeping a funky alternative design that suits the musical acts perfectly.
