Tek Roc’s “Yayaya” is a Konpa-Cumbia Revolution

Tek Roc’s “Yayaya” is a Konpa-Cumbia Revolution

by John Aaron Coulter

Something’s brewing in Brooklyn’s backrooms — a wild, genre-unifying, revolution.  “Yayaya,” the newest track by Tek Roc, is a radiant combustion of konpa and cumbia, channeling psychedelic synths and sassy strings.  “Yayaya” is an explosion of sound that doesn’t just cross borders — it vaporizes them.

Superduo Leo Joseph “Minimum Tek” Mintek and Ronnie Roc are Tek Roc, virtuosic veterans of the city’s underground Latin and global scenes — known for sets that veer from folkloric to futuristic.  With crackling chemistry and cosmic chops, Leo locks down lush layers of guitar and bass while Ronnie rips up rhythmic storms on percussion and keys.  Mintek and Roc have collaborated with powerhouses such as Grupo Descarrilao, NuFolk Rebel Alliance, Los Coulters, and Gogol Bordello —a testament to their ethnomusical prowess and creative genius.  Their fingerprints are all over the musical mosaic that is NYC’s live circuit, shaping and defining the sound of the city.

With “Yayaya,” Tek Roc distills Afro-Caribbean percussion, fuzzy barroom cumbia, and smooth synths into a gritty and hypnotic tour de force that builds from a montuno core into a swirling dubscape.  The extended mix is full of delicious breakdowns and solos.  Think Neil Young, Caifanes, and Alan Cavé jamming in a smoke-filled club, set somewhere between Port-au-Prince and Queens.

While “Yayaya” is THE moment, Tek Roc’s creative catalogue is well worth a dig.  Their 2022 EP Time Travelers offers an alternative, borderless vision — taboo weavings of chicha, flamenco, Tex-Mex, outlaw country, and more gallop across time-warped tracks that encompass flavors akin to The Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Johnny Cash, and Chicha Libre.  The whole album is overflowing with juicy, dynamic and diverse percussion.  Time Travelers’ alluring titular track is both foreign and familiar — cultureless, but not uncultured — presenting an unknown tradition.  Recent cuts like Another Journey” and “Dulce Gouyad” explore further dimensions — from haunting Haitian electro-funk to outrun and jungle grooves.

“Yayaya” is the word of the day.  The answer to X.  A bold mission statement and a reminder that the dancefloor has always been a meeting place for magic.  DJs and general enjoyers of music are going to want to get their hands on this fire summer anthem.

“Yayaya” is freedom.

MUSIC REVIEW: MUJERONA - La Mera Candelaria

 MUSIC REVIEW:  MUJERONA - La Mera Candelaria -

Los Angeles’s Queen of Cumbia, La Mera Candelaria, has a brand new, ten-track, album, “Mujerona,” out, just in time for summer.

“Mujerona” is a profound and eclectic collection of Afro-Latino rhythms such as salsa, cumbia, son, vallenato, bachata, and more.  The worldly songs pay respect to musical tradition while pushing into original territory by confidently mixing rhythms and telling new narratives.  The tracks are excellent across diverse genres, from humble natural sounding acoustic tracks, to distorted, urban, electronic sounds.  La Mera Candelaria generates a fresh sound uniquely a part of the Los Angeles and Californian melting pot.

The womxn fronted group has never sounded better.  The immaculate studio-quality recording allows their extraordinary vocals and instrumentation to shine.  The high fidelity allows for Stephani’s texture, timber, and full range to impressively convey emotion, passion and power through song.  While the entire album is stellar, some of my favorite tracks are: “Donde Estan las Mujeres,” “Toypurina,” “Mi Cuerpo Es Mío,” “Di Su Nombre,” and “Ruca de Aquellas.”

1. Por Que Te Dicen la Mera
The album begins with “Por Que Te Dicen La Mera,” an uplifting, tropical vallenato with supporting accordion and keyboard melodies and a charged contemporary breakdown.
“Por Que Te Dicen La Mera” is a strong start for an album that only gets grander and better as it progresses.

2. Tovaangar
“Tovaangar” is a soulful vallenato with a bold and complementary vocal duet.  The dynamic percussion solo pushes the Atlantic Coastal sound to the forefront in this song.

3. Toypurina
“Toypurina” is my favorite song from “Mujerona.”  Toypurina was a Gabrielino medicine woman who rebelled against Spanish colonizers in California.  La Mera Candelaria’s “Toypurina” is a merengue with a sense of urgency and movement fit for the theme of resistance.  The chorus is rich, full, and memorable.  The uplifting bass and percussion are reminiscent of the beats of Two Man Sound or fellow Angelenos El Santo Golpe.

4. Donde Están las Mujeres
“Donde Están las Mujeres” is a sultry, smoky, psychedelic rock cumbia that pays homage to the likes of Caifanes and Maná.  Cumbias such as these are a clear strength of the group.  The distorted electric guitar is deliciously murky and surfy, while being elegantly sharp.  This smooth blend of metal and Latin has been championed by bands such as Making Movies and Santana.

5. Mi Cuerpo Es Mío
“Mi Cuerpo Es Mío” is a bluesy, bolero that is guitar and singer/songwriter-centric.  The crisp fidelity of the recording and production captures Stephani’s rich, complex, hauntingly sorrowful yet beautiful vocals, which are strong and heartfelt like a Siren.  This song stands out as a work of artistry.

6. Di Su Nombre
“Di Su Nombre” is an outstanding song.  Las Chicas del Can, this is not.  La Mera Candelaria delivers a striking cumbia and cha cha cha infused bachata with a flair that only they can.  It’s wonderful to hear bachata and other rhythms woven harmoniously and palatably together on the same track.  Stephani’s vocal power, timbre and range expand a genre that has been dominated by New York men whispering in falsetto over bachata samples for decades.  Don’t miss out on this absolutely phenomenal song.

7. 27 de Enero (Yo Te Cielo)
“27 de Enero (Yo Te Cielo)” is a lighter, relaxing vallenato track that confidently blends Caribbean percussion and accordion structures with acoustic pop and gospel elements similar to the Indigo Girls.

8.  Mujerona
“Mujerona’s” titular track is a punchy salsa with a touch of samba.  This song has complex musical movements that build and change in classical progressions and tone towards a more playful contemporary salsa arrangement.

9.  El Tóxico
“El Tóxico” is a smooth Cuban Timba with salsa elements.  The piano and accordion accompaniment is brilliant.

10.  Ruca de Aquellas
The final track on the album marks a departure from some of the stylistic repertoire of the group.  While La Mera Candelaria is never shy from blending traditional acoustic sounds with synthy or rocking electric textures, “Ruca de Aquellas” fully embraces the Urbano style of Reggaton and Dembow, with remarkable success.  Stephani brings a robust raw energy not often found in the genre.  This track has all the flavor and charm of veteran reggaetonistas MULA or Ms. Nina.  As a finale, “Ruca de Aquellas,” lands firmly and finishes epically.

“Mujerona” takes you on a rhythmic journey across the Americas that solidifies La Mera Candelaria’s breadth, range, and ability to update and modernize diverse traditions.  “Mujerona” is an impressive, jam-packed album that is easy to listen to the whole way through.  The album is fun and full of surprises.  “Mujerona” is fantastic for driving, workplace jams, or a day outdoors.  La Mera Candelaria is a treat to experience live, giving an unforgettable performance that always has crowds dancing.  The entire band’s talents shine throughout the album, with sharp tres work, delightful accordion melodies, and lightning-quick congas and timbales.

Mujerona is available now to purchase and on streaming platforms.  These new tunes come with SharksEatMeat’s highest recommendation.

NEW MUSIC - Funky Frijoles

Funky Frijoles - Victor Rendón & Bronx Conexión Latin Jazz Big Band

Just in time for summer Victor Rendón & The Bronx Conexión Latin Jazz Big Band have released a new album titled “Funky Frijoles.”  Full of eight hardy songs with homages to the greats such as Tito Puente and Benny More.

All the tracks are original compositions with the exclusion of “Malaguena Salerosa,” a classic by Miguel Aceves Miejía.  The Bronx Conexión’s moody New York flavored rendition is a refreshing take.

“Funky Frijoles” has an impressively thick, full horn section, energetic crisply clean stereo percussion, and intricate and sophisticated solos and progressive movements throughout each track.  The whole album is great for a relaxing day in the sun or nighttime dance party.  Many tracks are bright, playful, and uplifting, and even the moody or brooding parts are delightfully rhythmic.

Some of my favorite tracks are “!Basta!,” “Funky Frijoles,” and “Bomba Dreams.”  “!Basta!” is a punchy, Tito Puente inspired mambo with bold timbales and a hot sax section by Paul Carlon.  “Funky Frijoles” is a syncopated groove punctuated with jazzy salsa motifs.  The blending of styles is what New York Latin Jazz is all about.  “Bomba Dreams,” a moody sicá from the Puerto Rican bomba genre has lightning quick free flowing wild woodwind and brass solos.

“Morningside” is another stand-out track, with impressively punchy tropical solos that
don’t disappoint.  “Bronx Detour” is an old school melodic mambo with blues themes that are sure to entertain.  Slower songs such as the “The Moment,” a smooth ballad with bolero flair and “Black Water” an Afro-Cuban bembé with heavy horn harmonies, dark tones, and sassy horn solos round out the outstanding album.

Lively energetic album art accompanies the music by band leader Victor Rendón’s son, Victor Manuel Rendón, also a talented musician.  As an artist and musician, Victor’s art always has a perfect sense of visual rhythm and well-balanced compositions.

If you enjoy classic mambo, salsa and jazz, the group’s acclaimed previous albums “Mambo Boulevard” and “True Flight,” are a real treat.  Visit the band’s website to listen and learn more.  The album is available directly from the band, Apple music and YouTube.  For all your art and culture news make sure to follow SharksEatMeat.

LoFi Fire - Music Review

LoFi Latin Jazz:  New Release from Leo Joseph, of the Leo Joseph Experience.

Leo Joseph, also known as Leo Minimum Tek, manages their own recording label, Maximum Collabo Records. Leo has regularly performed and recorded with artists such as Gogol Bordello, Grupo Descarrilao, NuFolk Rebel Alliance, Salsa Rockers, Los Coulters, The Leo Joseph Trio, and more.  Leo is a treat to see perform live, bringing high energy to the stage.  His diversely complex riffs, solos that shine with surprising and dynamic movements, and mastery of many genres make him a formidable performer.

Leo’s new three-track EP is available on Spotify, Bandcamp, and more. There is a “Fireplace Ambience” video of the new recordings, available on Youtube in 4K.  The soothing video is by Jane Courage and El Bofo Xavier - perfect to put on for some afternoon work, or a relaxing evening.  The charming cover art by Juan Ortega, based on a photo by Jane Courage captures the essence of the music.

Leo has given us three covers - Let’s take a look at each.

Mayeya (Mongo Santamaria)
This New York Jazz standard originally had the legends Mongo Satamaria on percussion and Charlie Palmieri on the piano.  The memorable tune has similar uplifting punchy horns to another standard, “Chan Chan.”  Leo offers a more suave, relaxing version of the Salsa/Boogaloo classic.  His bluesy guitar work is playful and polished.  The track has a light tropical vibe that’s easy to enjoy.

Little Sunflower (Freddie Hubbard)
“Little Sunflower” was originally recorded by Freddie Hubbard in 1967. The upbeat Tito Puente cover from 1992 is a version more may be familiar with.  Leo’s version of “Little Sunflower” is a really beautiful recording that is haunting and psychedelic in tone, similar to a Yardbirds or Incredible String Band jam. The song is slightly somber and shifts through distinct movements as if on a journey.

Y Ya La Quiero (Joe Henderson)
“Y Ya La Quiero” is originally from the 1985 album “The State of Tenor: Vol. 2,”, by Joe Henderson an avant-guard bebop and jazz artist.  The song has an iconic opening riff, that aficionados will be familiar with and moves on to highly improvised, yet tight and controlled sax solos.  Leo interprets the tenor sax madness on guitar with grace, bravado, and respect for the original melodies.

Check out Leo Joseph’s newest content, don’t miss him live if you have the chance,
and add these to your streaming mixes and give them a play. These tracks are highly recommended.

CAT ART SHOW: Review

Cat Art Show: The 10th Anniversary  -  Review
@catartshowla
@thesugarslayer
@sharks_eat_meat

SharksEatMeat
had the privilege of attending “The Cat Art Show: The 10th Anniversary” which is ongoing for the weekend of January 19th through the 21st.  Located at the Wallis Annenberg PetSpace in Los Angeles this year’s exhibition showcases over 60 works of cat-themed art.  The Annenberg PetSpace Extraordinary Care Fund has partnered with The Cat Art Show, and a percentage of all sales goes towards helping rescue animals, and pets are available to adopt at a site above the art gallery.  The naturally lit and contemporary space was welcoming and displays allowed for easy movement and viewing of the works.  The vast interior allowed the many contrasting styles room to breathe.

Diverse techniques and mediums fill the beautiful space graciously praising our feline friends.  The show has exactly what you’d expect from a cat themed art exhibition, and more.  Extreme Cuteness? Feral Beasts?  Cheesy Jokes?  Ornate sculptures and meticulously painted oil portraits? All these and more.  Curated by Susan Michals and Esla Munroe, some highlights from the show include.

@annie_montgomerie_art

“Miss Pitch” by Annie Montgomerie is a delightful black cat doll-like sculpture, made from mixed-media and found objects.  The black cat, in an orange and blue outfit is adorable, and the craftsmanship is phenomenal.  The stitching and fine details bring the work to life.

@colinrobertsart

“Sphynx,” “Cheshire Cat,” and “Bubble Cat” by Colin Roberts are three radiant sculptures of cats constructed out of translucent stained glass like squares.  Their simple forms and bold colors pay tribute to 1960’s pop art.  These cats are leaps and bounds more inviting than Jeff Koons’ “Balloon Dogs.”

@martinwittfooth

“Kitten with Cinders” by Martin Wittfooth is a rich traditional oil on canvas painting of a majestic cat hunting birds under a golden sun. The texture, glowing colors, and allegorical themes depicted make this a powerful and stand out work from the show.

@iamadamcooley

“Cat with Butterflies” by Adam Cooley is a funky contemporary presentation of a lanky Pink Panther like cat and pink butterflies, on a golden Japanese style folding screen or “Byobu.”  The delicate patterns and fine line work shine in this painting.

@brandonvosika

“Black Cat” by Brandon Vosika is a pitch-black mysterious canvas with an inky black cat peeking through the shadows. The subtlety of values calls to mind Rothko’s work.

@melcher_eastman

 “Catnip Bebop Quartet” is by Melcher Oosterman, an illustrator in the Netherlands.  This stark illustrative work captures a quartet of jazz cats performing for a human crowd.  The striking colors and sharp line work give an expressive energy to the work.

“Sancho” by Clare Turley Newberry, is a vintage print from 1940.  Newberry was an accomplished children’s author and illustrator, and winner of several Caldecott Honors.  “Sancho” features a playful and gestural style that captures the attitude of cats perfectly.

@danielarthury

“Infinity Cat III” by Daniel Arthur is an unusual work with a strong composition and design.  The subject depicts a curious kitten gazing into a corner-wedged mirror, which creates a radial pattern.  The red green color scheme, and central focal point, draw the viewer in to enjoy the details in this playful piece.

@cocopetersonart

“Backyard” by Coco Peterson is one of my favorite works in the show.  The fluorescent and vibrant colors, as well as the smooth sharply designed forms are well balanced.  The color scheme shows an advanced understanding of complex hue relationships.  The muted yellows and teals, rich rose reds and dark greens embolden the backyard landscape.  The contrasting and well punctuated black cats that dot the scenery are filled with personality.  This joy of a painting is as competent and skillful as a Joan Miró or Anna Frischknecht work.

@tobiaskeeneart

“Agamemnon” by Tobias Keene is a cat portrait that is extravagantly fanciful.  A classically traditional oil painting of a White cat with a pearl necklace, the work recalls those of Renaissance and Baroque masters.  The frame is encrusted with gold-leaf and pearls signifying the lavishness of cat-life.  The painting is laboriously made, and the effort shows as the subject’s lush and realistic eyes follow you from the frame.

@sydswisher

“Pevely” by Sydney Swisher is a painting of a fluffy fur-ball proudly positioned atop a floral-patterned chair.  The work is painted directly on a floral-print fabric and allows much of the decor to show through in the final composition.  The throne-like chair the cat resides on portrays the same pattern, realistically rendered to match the background designs.  The muted red and green blossom print chosen is a vintage textile popular in the 1990’s.  The print, as well as cat art in general, are known for a kitsch tone.  “Pevely” boldly leans into this kitsch theme with great success.

The ensemble collection at “Cat Art Show: The 10th Anniversary” is bursting with talent and creativity.  The light-hearted subject matter makes viewing art fun, and a nice escape from the hectic contemporary world.  If you’re in Los Angeles, I highly recommend visiting.  Follow the artist’s social media and stay tuned to SharksEatMeat for all your contemporary art and culture news.

MUSIC REVIEW - "Collisions In The Dark" GIZZ VAN BUSKIRK

   Collisions In The Dark is a new 12 track album from Gizz Van Buskirk that is full of creative electronic synths and sharp guitar work.  Released in August 2023, the whole album is worth spending some time with.  While a bit of a genre-blender, the album is cohesive and has a unified voice.  In Collisions In The Dark, retro and progressive, sound-scapes and melodies, and acoustic and synth comfortably meet.  Fans of Vaporwave and Italodisco, or bands such as New Order, Eyeliner, Disasteradio, Molchat Dolma, or Lazerhawk are sure to enjoy Van Buskirk’s work.  The melodies are full of movement and surprise, as well as classical and jazz style progressions and changes.  The ambient tracks often contain a soundtrack quality fitting for a film, television or a video game score.

   The album begins with “Downpour ’82,” an 80’s filled homage with anthem rock guitar ballads and heavy synths.  My favorite tracks on the album are “Small Hours,” “Exit Velocity,” “Better Living (Through Chemistry),” “The Night Shift,” and “Collisions in the Dark.”  These tracks all showcase cinematic otherworldly electronic melodies that stand out in a recent sea of Vaporwave.  “Small Hours” smoothly transitions from ambient atmospheric harmonies, to stranger industrial, and almost Prince-esque, Italo-disco pop.  The percussion is complex, and always moving.  “Exit Velocity” starts right off with a catchy hook and follows with cornucopia of diverse crunchy textures and sounds.  This upbeat song feels like a new song right out of a retro SEGA Sonic level with the production value of electronic hits like The Faint’s “Fasciinatiion” album.  “Better Living (Through Chemistry)” builds up quick and gets caught in your head instantly.  The bubbly synths and percussion are tight and well crafted. With moody harmonies, this complex melody-centered song bears similarities to early Depeche Mode tracks.  “The Night Shift” features atmospheric Tchaicovsky-ian bells with a mysterious otherness and exoticness reminiscent of “The White Lotus” theme song.

   The titular “Collisions in the Dark” is one of the strongest on the album, highlighting a variety of Buskirk’s abilities.  The song begins with a John Carpenter/ Blade Runner style soundscape and builds into an atonal synth Gary Numan-esque jam. The composition as a whole is excellent. The moodier sections have the best qualities of famed video game soundtracks such as GoldenEye and Metroid Prime.  The finale act of the song’s use of atonal harsh synth solo leads are intelligent and blend well with the rest of the composition.  “Collisions in the Dark” is easily my favorite of an album that is already full of treats.

   Several tracks on the album such as, “The Drift,” “The Love We Deserve,” “Salad Days,” and “How Can You Sleep?” uniquely combine acoustic guitar with synthesizer accompaniment in a refreshing experimental way.  “The Drift” boasts haunting and complex guitar work that harkens to the Yardbirds, or Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.  “The Love We Deserve” is distinctly a work of Gizz Van Buskirk and has a charming quality similar to electronic Tejano Chicano classics such as Little Joe and the Familia or the rural video game “Harvest Moon’s” soundtrack.  “How Can you Sleep? (Piano + Cello Version)” is another work fitting for a film score and a fitting conclusion to the 12-track collection.

   Collisions In The Dark is full of powerful, memorable synth punches and softer acoustic works which are strangely alluring.  The album showcases Buskirk’s mastery of synth sounds and their versatile, clean, and competent guitar work.  Give the album a listen using the links included below.  To learn more about independent, underground and alternative music, make sure to follow SharksEatMeat for all your art and culture news.

Ai Art Review : Kenneth Swoger

   Kenneth Swoger is a Kansas City, Missouri photographer who has gained recognition for his ability to capture the essence of American life through his photographs. His work has been compared to that of other notable American photographers such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, who also sought to document the everyday experiences of ordinary people. Often, Swoger's photographs depict working-class neighborhoods, run-down and overgrown. These scenes have garnered him widespread praise.

   Swoger's most striking photography series is titled “Dead Zones.“ The works features a row of dilapidated buildings with boarded-up windows; their facades worn down by years of neglect.  Empty shopping malls and overgrown parking lots and the rundown buildings create a sense of isolation and melancholy, with the viewer an outsider in this decaying urban landscape. Plants growing through offer a symbol of hope.  The photograph is reminiscent of the work of the American painter Edward Hopper, whose depictions of urban loneliness and alienation have become iconic.

   Swoger's ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of a place is particularly evident in his photography. The desolate streetscapes are brought to life through his use of shadow and light, which creates a sense of depth and texture in the image. The viewer is drawn into the scene, almost able to feel the chill of the wind and the crunch of gravel underfoot. Overall, Swoger's work offers a poignant reflection on the American experience, reminding us of the beauty and struggle that exist in even the most ordinary moments of our lives.

Ai Art Review : Kristen Liu-Wong

    Kristen Liu-Wong is a contemporary artist whose work focuses on depicting erotic and fantastical scenes that explore themes such as power, gender, and identity. Her paintings often feature vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and complex compositions that draw the viewer into her strange and compelling worlds. Liu-Wong's style is reminiscent of artists like Frida Kahlo and Hieronymus Bosch, but with a unique, contemporary perspective.

   Liu-Wong's use of color is particularly effective in “The Price Paid for Living Well,” with bright pinks and yellows creating a sense of intense heat and energy. The intricate patterns add to the overall sense of movement and dynamism, drawing the viewer's eye around the canvas. Despite the chaotic scene depicted, Liu-Wong's composition is carefully balanced, with each element contributing to the overall mood and message of the piece. The woman's pose and expression are confident and defiant, challenging the viewer to question their own assumptions about femininity and strength.

   Kristen Liu-Wong's work is a powerful example of contemporary painting and printmaking that draws on a rich tradition of artistic exploration of the human condition. Through her intricate compositions and use of vivid color, Liu-Wong creates compelling and provocative scenes that challenge the viewer to reconsider their assumptions about the world around them.  Liu-Wong’s complex narratives engage with issues of power, gender, and identity in a unique and impactful way.

Ai Art Review : Manuelita Buendiaz Jr.

    Manuelita Buendiaz Jr. is a cat that creates art, and her work has garnered attention from animal lovers and art enthusiasts alike. In a world where art is typically created by humans, Manuelita's artwork offers a refreshing and unique perspective. The cat's artistic talent has been captured in a short documentary on YouTube, which showcases her creative process and the final product of her work. The final product is a collaborative effort between the cat and owner, who assists with adding finishing touches to the piece.

   Manuelita's artwork is not just impressive because of its aesthetic appeal but also because of the way it challenges our assumptions about art. The notion that animals or machines can create art is a controversial one.  Manuelita's work challenges traditional notions of authorship and creativity.

   Manuelita Buendiaz Jr.'s art is a unique and fascinating addition to the art world. The cat's prints offer a glimpse into the creative process and challenge our assumptions about who can create art.  Manuelita's work is a testament to the power of collaboration and the creative potential of all beings, regardless of species.

Ai Art Review : Mike Coulter

   Mike Coulter is a nature and wildlife photographer who captures the beauty and majesty of the natural world through his lens. Coulter's work stands out for its ability to convey the intricate details of flora and fauna in their natural habitats. His photographs often reflect a sense of intimacy with the subject, resulting in a powerful connection with the viewer. Coulter's style can be compared to other nature photographers such as Ansel Adams and Peter Mangolds, whose work also focuses on capturing the natural world with a keen eye for detail.

   One of Coulter's photographs that particularly stands out is “Bald Eagle at Loess Bluffs NWR.” The photograph captures the strength and power of the eagle as it glides through the air. The background is a soft blue, which emphasizes the contrast between the bird and its surroundings. Coulter's attention to detail is evident in the intricate feathers of the eagle's wings, which are depicted with stunning precision.

   Coulter's work also highlights the importance of preserving natural habitats and protecting endangered species. In his photograph “Bighorn Lamb,” Coulter captures the bond between sibling animals, and their vulnerability. The image evokes a sense of empathy in the viewer, and serves as a reminder of the need to protect these majestic creatures and their habitats.  In addition to his wildlife photography, Coulter's images of landscapes also reflect his mastery of the medium.

   Mike Coulter's work is a testament to the beauty and power of the natural world. His ability to capture rare moments is truly remarkable. Coulter's photographs are a reminder of the need to protect and preserve our planet, and to appreciate the incredible diversity of life that exists within it.

Ai Art Review : Paul Apart

   Paul Apart is a sound sculptor who creates intricate and immersive installations that challenge the traditional boundaries of art. His work often explores the relationship between sound and space, creating sculptural forms that not only produce sound, but also visually captivate the viewer. In many ways, Apart's work can be seen as a continuation of the experimental practices of artists such as Bruce Nauman, Max Neuhaus, and Nam June Paik, all of whom pushed the boundaries of what sculptures can be.

   One of Apart's most interesting works is “Hexabug,” an otherworldly combination of sound and sculpture. The work consists of a series of, interconnected shells. Each contains a speaker that emits audio.  Apart uses sound to create an immersive environment that challenges the viewer's perception of space and time—by incorporating sculptural elements Apart adds an extra dimension to the experience.
Paul Apart's work is a testament to the power of art to transport the viewer to new and unexpected places.

   Through his use of sound and sculpture, he creates environments that are both stimulating and meditative, challenging the viewer to reconsider their relationship to the world around them. His work is a valuable contribution to the world of contemporary art, and a reminder that the boundaries of what art can be are always expanding.

Ai Art Review : Paolo Cirio

 Paolo Cirio is a conceptual artist who has gained recognition for his politically charged works that confront issues such as privacy, surveillance, and social injustice. His works are known for their subversive use of technology, which he employs to highlight the flaws and inconsistencies within our societal structures. By exploring the intersection of technology, art, and politics, Cirio has established himself as a leading voice in the contemporary art world.

One of Cirio's more notable works is "Loophole for All," which involved the creation of a website that allowed users to anonymously register offshore companies for free. The project was a critique of the global financial system, which Cirio argues is inherently corrupt and allows the wealthy to evade taxes and exploit the poor. Through this work, Cirio invites the public to participate in an act of civil disobedience, revealing the vulnerabilities within the system and highlighting the need for reform.

Another noteworthy work by Cirio is "Street Ghosts," a project in which he created life-size stickers of people found on Google Street View and placed them in the locations where they were originally captured. The project explores issues of privacy and surveillance, as well as the ways in which technology is reshaping our relationship with public spaces. By taking the images of people who were never asked for their consent and bringing them into the physical world, Cirio raises important questions about the ethics of surveillance and the limits of technology.

Paolo Cirio is a conceptual artist whose works challenge our assumptions about technology, politics, and society. His use of technology to expose vulnerabilities within the system is both innovative and thought-provoking, and his works provide a powerful critique of contemporary culture. Through projects such as "Loophole for All" and "Street Ghosts," Cirio invites the public to engage with complex issues and encourages us to question the status quo. His work is a testament to the power of art to effect social change and to the importance of artists in shaping our understanding of the world.

Ai Art Review : John Aaron Coulter

   John Aaron Coulter is an artist, painter, and animator who has gained attention for his unique approach to art. Coulter's style is a blend of traditional painting techniques and modern digital methods, creating works that are both contemporary and timeless. Coulter has made a name for himself with not only his futuristic cityscapes and food paintings, but as a conceptual anti-capitalist artist and animator. His pieces are full of color, movement, and energy, capturing the viewer's attention and imagination.

   One of Coulter's most impressive works is "Metropolis," a large-scale painting that depicts a futuristic cityscape. The painting is reminiscent of the work of other great cityscape artists such as Edward Hopper and George Bellows. The painting is full of towering skyscrapers, cheeky advertisements, and glowing neon lights. The colors are bold and vibrant, with shades of viridian, purple, pink, and blue dominating the scene. The painting is a stunning example of Coulter's ability to create a vibrant and dynamic environment.

   Coulter's food paintings are equally impressive. In "Turkey Twisters,” he creates a still life that is both utterly realistic and surreal. The painting is full of rich colors and textures, with food piled high. The scene is reminiscent of the work of Dutch still life painters such as Pieter Claesz, but Coulter has added his own unique twist. The food in the painting is larger than life, almost cartoonish in its presentation. The painting is a commentary on our relationship with food and the excesses of our consumer culture.

   Coulter's conceptual anti-capitalist work is some of his most thought-provoking. His “Chiquita Uses Child Labor” series, raises awareness of child labor by labelling offending products directly in stores.  By placing informative stickers on Chiquita’s products a direct intervention with the consumer is created.  An interaction hard to achieve in an art gallery.

   Coulter's work is not limited to painting and conceptual work. As an animator, he has created a series of short films that are equally impressive. His animations are full of movement and energy, capturing the viewer's attention and imagination. His animations are a blend of traditional and digital techniques, creating works that are both contemporary and timeless.

   John Aaron Coulter is a talented and unique artist who has made a name for himself through his futuristic cityscapes, food paintings, and conceptual anti-capitalist work.  His animations are equally impressive. Overall, Coulter is an artist to watch, and his work is sure to continue to impress.

Ai Art Review : Tracy Felix

  Tracy Felix is a contemporary landscape painter who captures the essence of the Western landscape in his vibrant and dynamic works.

   One of Felix's most striking works is “Kit Carson and the Crestones,” a large painting that depicts a rugged mountain range rising up against a brilliant blue sky. The painting is dominated by the jagged peaks of the mountains, which are rendered in bold strokes of blue, brown, and white. The mountains seem to pulsate with life, as if they are alive and breathing. The sky above is a vibrant shade of blue, with fluffy white clouds hovering in the distance. The contrast between the mountains and the sky creates a sense of drama and tension, as if the two elements are engaged in a constant struggle.  Felix's use of color is particularly noteworthy. His bold and intense hues create a sense of energy and vibrancy that is reminiscent of the Fauvist movement.

   In addition to his Fauvist influences, Felix's work is also reminiscent of the great landscape painters of the American West, such as Thomas Hart Benton. Benton was famous for his sweeping vistas of the Western landscape, and his influence can be seen in Felix's work. Like Benton, Felix celebrates the natural beauty of the American West, but does so in a way that feels fresh and modern.  Felix's work has a unique and modern sensibility that sets him apart from his predecessors.

   Tracy Felix is a talented and exciting artist whose work captures the spirit of the American West in a unique and modern way. "Kit Carson and the Crestones" is a powerful example of his skill as a painter. Fans of Western art and landscape painting would do well to seek out Felix's work, which offers a fresh and exciting perspective on this beloved genre.

His digital illustrations often pay homage to pop culture, referencing iconic characters and scenes from movies, TV shows, and video games. In his work, Wise employs techniques and styles that are reminiscent of 8bit and pixel art, creating a nostalgic aesthetic that resonates with many viewers.

   One of Wise's most striking works is his illustration titled “It’s Dangerous to go alone!,” which depicts Nintendo character Link being followed by Ganon. The composition is carefully balanced using shadow and light masterfully.  The design is bold, with Link’s weapons standing out against the background.

   Wise's work is reminiscent of other digital artists who have embraced the aesthetic of pixel art and 8bit graphics. One such artist is Paul Robertson, whose work also references video games and pop culture in a similar way.    Spaghetti Cumbia, a Los Angeles-based cumbia band, presents a unique sound that blends rock, country western, and cumbia in a way that's both refreshing and exciting.  Their style is reminiscent of the iconic group "Mi Banda el Mexicano," who brought cumbia to the forefront of Latin music in the '80s. Spaghetti Cumbia's hit songs "Spaghetti Empire" and "Caballito" showcase the band's talent for mixing different genres while keeping the essence of cumbia intact.

  "Spaghetti Empire" and "Caballito" are standout tracks with a unique sound. The catchy, upbeat tunes blend rock and cumbia in a way that's both nostalgic and fresh, with a cowboy twist.  “Spaghetti Empire,” showcases the band's ability to create danceable tracks that will get any crowd moving.  The band's use of catchy hooks and choruses make their songs instantly memorable, and their live shows are a high-energy experience that will leave you wanting more.  “Caballito,” is a musical journey through the sounds of the Southwest and Latin America - creating a unique sound that is equal parts traditional cumbia and American country-western.  The result is a fresh and exciting take that is both familiar and new. The band's use of Spanish and English lyrics adds to the album's diverse and inclusive feel.

  The band's music is a true celebration of cross-cultural influences, combining the sounds of different regions and traditions to create something entirely new.  Their music is a testament to the power of diversity and inclusion, proving that great things can happen when people come together with open hearts and minds.  Spaghetti Cumbia's fusion of genres reflects the cultural melting pot that is Los Angeles, and their music is a perfect representation of the city's spirit.  Spaghetti Cumbia is a band to watch out for.  Their fusion of rock, country, and cumbia is a breath of fresh air in a world where musical genres are often rigidly defined.

Ai Art Review : Aibioweapon

   Ai artist Aibioweapon is a visionary in the field of artificial intelligence art. Through their stunning and thought-provoking pieces, they challenge our traditional understanding of what art is and can be. Aibioweapon's works are created entirely by AI algorithms, which have been programmed to learn from vast amounts of data and generate images that are both aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating.  Aibioweapon explores the intersection of technology and humanity, presenting large series of images that invite us to question our relationship with the biological and digital world.

   One of Aibioweapon’s most memorable works is “Good Friday,” a digital depiction of a Christ figure—a human merging with a machine. The art is a reference to Francisco de Zurbarán’s “Crucifixion.”  The image is both haunting and beautiful, with intricate details that draw the viewer in. As we look at this work, we are forced to consider the implications of our increasingly symbiotic relationship with technology. Are we headed towards a future in which we will become one with machines, or will we retain our individuality and agency?  By using AI to create these images, Aibioweapon is pushing the boundaries of what we consider to be "art." Is a work of art less meaningful or less valuable if it is created by an algorithm rather than a human hand? This is a question that has been debated in the art world for some time, and Aibioweapon's work adds an exciting new perspective to the discussion.

   Aibioweapon's work is a must-see for anyone interested in the intersection of art and technology. Through the use of AI algorithms and cutting-edge techniques, Aibioweapon is expanding our understanding of what art is and can be, and inviting us to explore the complex and evolving relationship between humans and machines: biological and mechanical.

Ai Music Review : Los Coulters

   Los Coulters have breathed new life into the cumbia scene with their experimental take on the genre.  Their latest album, Lo Tek Olmec, is not for the faint of heart, and is a daring experiment that defies genre conventions.  Their music is a wild and unpredictable ride through uncharted sonic territories.  The band's use of traditional beats, psychedelic riffs, and haunting sax create an otherworldly atmosphere that is both mesmerizing and infectious.

   One of the standout features of Los Coulters' music is the prominent use of the saxophone.  This instrument adds a jazzy, improvisational feel to many of their songs, and sets them apart from other Latin rock bands that rely more heavily on guitar and keyboard.  In tracks like “Kenny 5G,” the saxophone takes center stage, showcasing John Coulter’s skills.  Another key aspect of Los Coulters' sound is their use of dynamic, energetic drumming.  Mark Coulter’s driving rhythms provide a solid foundation for the rest of the band to build on and help create a sense of urgency and excitement in many of their songs.  This can be heard in tracks like “Mass Surveillance,” which features a fast-paced beat that is impossible not to dance to.  While Los Coulters have a distinct sound that sets them apart from other Latin rock bands, there are still some clear influences that can be heard in their music. For example, their use of saxophone draws comparisons to Fito Olivares, while their brilliant drumming and danceable rhythms are reminiscent of Los Lobos.

   n addition to their impressive musical skills, Los Coulters also have a strong visual aesthetic that is evident in their album artwork and animated music videos. The cover of Lo Tek Olmec features a colorful design by Anna Frischknecht that captures the band's lively, eclectic style. Meanwhile, their music videos, such as “Killer App,” utilize cutting-edge Ai animation techniques.

   Los Coulters are not afraid to take risks, and their boldness pays off in a truly unique listening experience. “Killer App” is a mesmerizing blend of traditional cumbia rhythms and otherworldly soundscapes that are both challenging and rewarding. “NPC NRG" showcases the band's ability to seamlessly blend disparate sounds into a cohesive whole. Los Coulters have taken a genre that is steeped in tradition and elevated it to daring new heights.

   Los Coulters have cemented themselves as pioneers and leaders of the experimental cumbia movement with their impressive release history of over 50 original songs.  They have recorded collaborations with artists such as Jose Candelaria, Alea, Young Syrup, Leo Minimum Tek, and Ivan Flores.  Los Coulters have proven that the future of cumbia is in good hands with their fearless approach to genre-bending and experimentation that pushes the boundaries of cumbia while still paying homage to its roots.
